Healthy Food, Healthy Communities

Julian Mocine-McQueen and Sean Muldoon, Green the Block

Healthy Carrots! This summer, Green The Block is ready to celebrate the great summer tradition of breaking bread with friends and family with our Healthy Food, Healthy Communities Celebration!

But it's not just any food we're using in our celebration. We're celebrating healthy, local food and the choices we make when it comes to our diet.

Often when we think of environmental issues, we think of global warming and pollution, but the decisions we make around our diet have a tremendous effect on the health of our planet and our communities.

Please join us and throw a Healthy Food, Healthy Communities Celebration cook out, barbecue or potluck. What better time to educate and engage our communities about healthy food choices than the summer time, when the fruit is sweet and the veggies fresh? Hold an event, and add it to our Green The Block event map.

If you still have questions about what healthy food choices can look like, you are not alone. Check out these easy guides to begin transforming your choices now.

Wondering where to buy cheap, healthy food? Find a farmers market in your area. The prices are right, the food is as good as it gets, and its grown nearby, which means less carbon is used to transport and sell it!

Too hot outside for a barbecue? Invite folks over for movie night, and screen a food-themed movie, or start a book club with one of these food themed books.

And of course, Green The Block is about action, and food is one of the most important areas we can focus. Many low income communities and communities of color lack access to healthy food choices. There are dozens of organizations around the country that are working to change this.  Please check our blog for stories and ways to get involved, search for folks doing work in your community, or contact us directly for ways you can get involved.

Happy Eating,

Sean, Julian and the GTB Team
